Not My Place

Structural Image

This photo was taken at the historic town of Picton. I found this house interesting as it is surrounded by shrubs, and looks almost as if it is trying to hide, or be hidden. The structural and architectural elements of the car and house creates a structural image. Elements of line, shape, colour, and texture are used throughout this image. Line is found on the road and driveway, in the shrubs and trees, in the gates, and on the roof. Organic shape is found in the grass, shrubberies, and trees, while geometric shape is found in the car and house. Colour is found all throughout the image, the brightest being the green nature and red car. Texture is found on the roof, on the road, and in the nature that surrounds the house.

Edits:

  • Levels of the image were changed to make the colours brighter.

From Behind The Bushes

Structural Image

This photo was taken in Picton, overlooking the mountainous nature and suburban street. The house in the middle-ground of the image makes it a structural image. The compositional element of rule of thirds is used by placing the house towards the bottom right corner, while the top of the mountains is just above the centre of the image, and the tree is on the very edge of the left side. The design elements of line, shape, and colour are used in this photo. Line is shown in the trees, the house's walls, door and roof, and throughout the mountains. Shape and colour are also found in the trees, house, mountains, road, sky, and clouds.

Edits:

  • Levels were changed to bring the green and blue colours out.

The Final Gate

Structural Image

This photo was taken at the cemetery in Picton. The gate makes it a structural image, and even though it was taken at a cemetery, it isn't a cultural image as you can't quite see any graves or headstones. The compositional element of repetition is found in this image through the multiple pickets on the gate. Elements of design included in this image are line, shape, colour, and texture. Line is also found in the pickets of the gate, and on the grass and in the trees. Shape is found in the gate, trees, grass, and clouds. Colour is found in the white gate and clouds, blue sky, green grass, and dark trees, while texture is also found in the gate, grass and trees, but also in the concrete pathway.

Edits:

  • The photo was cropped to make the gate the centre focus.
  • The curves of the photo were also adjusted.

Always an Angel

Cultural Image

This photo was taken at a cemetery in Picton, an old, historic town. It is a cultural image as it explores the theme of death, and what people think of the dead, especially the people who died at a young age; that they are angels. Angle is the compositional element used in this photo, as the shot was taken from above, and looking down towards the angel and headstone. This is a high shot. Line, shape, colour, and texture are the elements of design used in this image. Line is found in the multiple twigs laying on the grave, on the angel, and on the headstone. Shape is found in the angel, while colour is found in the twigs and sticks. A rough texture is also found in the twigs and sticks, while a smoother texture is found on the angel. The headstone also has texture.

Edits:

  • The image was slightly saturated to bring out the orange colour in the twigs and sticks.

A Topsy Turvy World

Cultural & Structural Image

This image was taken from a second story window, looking out onto the suburban street and beach. Half of the image is taken of a louvered window, with the top half of the image reflected onto it. As it is a glass window, you can also see through the reflection to the bottom of the street with a car. The modern life portrayed through this image makes it cultural, while the car, houses, window, and power pole/line make it structural. The compositional element displayed in this photo symmetry and design elements include line, shape, and colour. Symmetry is shown through the reflection on the louvered window. It reflects the sky, roofs of houses, and the power pole and lines. Line is shown through the power lines, roofs and the road. Shape is found in the clouds in the sky, the houses, the car, the power line and the road. Colour is shown throughout the whole image; in the blue sky and ocean, white clouds and car, green trees, colourful houses, and dark power pole and lines.

Edits:

  • The image was cropped to cut off the top of the photo, as it was another window and ruined the effects of the reflection.
  • The levels were also changed to make the colours brighter and more abstract.

Looking Back

Structural Image

This image was taken on an old double-decker bus. When taking this image, I was slightly annoyed because I thought the boy was ruining the shot, but when I looked back, I realised it was better having him there as he created a point of focus. The structure and design of the bus makes it a structural image. Perspective, repetition, and symmetry are compositional elements portrayed in this image, while line, shape, and colour are elements of design in the image. Perspective is shown through the bus seemingly getting thinner and smaller as it gets further to the back of the image. Repetition is shown through the multiple seats on both sides of the bus, and multiple windows. Symmetry is shown through the left side of the image being almost identical to the right side, as they both have seats, windows, hand rails on the roof, and the boy. Line is shown on the boy's shirt, through the poles and hand rails all throughout the bus, and the borders around the windows. Shape is shown through the seats, windows, and the boy. And colour is shown throughout the light blue bus with dark blue seats, the boy, and the green outside the window.

Edits:

  • Levels were adjusted.
  • The back window was blurred on photoshop

Doorway Through Time

Structural Image

This image was taken of a door in an old steam train. Structure is portrayed in this image through the structure of the door and wheel on the right hand side of the image. Design elements highlighted in this image are line, shape, and colour. Line is shown through the outlining the shapes of the door, window, wheel, and other structural elements of the train, such as the walls. Colour is shown throughout the image; lighter colours in the middle and darker towards the top and bottom.

Edits:

  • I cropped the right side of the image off as it was a bright red fire extinguisher and ruined the colour composition of the image.
  • Curves of the image were changed.

Inside History

Structural Image

This image was taken from the inside of an old steam train's first class cabin. Structure is highlighted through the architecture and design of the cabin, as in, the doors and seats. Symmetry is the compositional element shown in this image as both sides of the image look like a mirror of the other. Line, shape, colour, and texture are the elements of design displayed in the image. Line is found in the wood, and creates the shape of the doors, windows, and seats. Colour is found in the gold/light brown wood and dark seats. These colours contrast each other, making them more vibrant. Texture is found in the roughness of the wood, and the smoothness of the seats.

Edits:

  • The levels were adjusted to create contrast between the golden coloured wood and dark coloured seats.

Have a Seat

Structural Image

This image is of a first class cabin in an old steam train. It is a structural image as it shows the architecture and structure of an old steam train's cabin. This photograph includes the compositional element of angle, and elements of design including line, shape, colour, and texture. Angle is found from the open doors being at the front of the image, while the seats are towards the back. Line is all throughout this image; in the wood, the seats, and in the general architecture of the cabin. The lines also create the shapes within the image, while colour makes them more obvious. The wood in the image has a rough texture while the seats have a smooth texture.

Edits:

  • I adjusted the curves in the image to bring out the colour and texture of the wood and seats.

Time Travel

Structural and Cultural Image.

This image was taken at Richmond Train Station while an old steam train was there to give rides for the weekend. This image contains a comparison of trains, and the technology they involve, from the old steam train, to the modern train run on electricity, therefore showing the technological advances in the last 50 years. This makes it a cultural image, while the trains themselves and the station make it a structural image. Perspective is the compositional element shown in this image through the trains leading down their tracks, moving further away but getting closer together. The design design elements shown in the image are line, shape, and colour. Line is seen on the platforms, trains and light poles. Shape is found in the trains, platforms, smoke and surrounding nature, while colour is throughout the whole image.

Edits:

  • The image was cropped.
  • The levels were changed to make it a more vibrant image.

A Passage Through Time

Structural Image

This image is of a corridor in an old steam train's carriage. It is a structural image as it shows architectural elements of the steam train, including walls, doors, cupboards, and windows. This image includes compositional elements of perspective and repetition, and design elements of line, shape, and texture. Perspective can be seen through the leading lines of the walls on the floor and ceiling, as they are moving closer together as the get further away. Repetition can be found in the multiple windows, doors, and door handles. Line can be found creating the shape of the walls, doors, windows, cupboards, floor, and ceiling. The wooden walls create a rough, organic texture, while the floors and ceiling create a solid, flatter texture.

Edits:

  • The levels of the image were changed.

On My Way

Cultural Image

This image was taken on a photography class excursion to the city. The image was taken on one of the breaks, when I was trying to get an image with an interesting shadow. This is a cultural image as it displays the urban life of a busy work day and the constant use of technology, i.e. the phone in the man’s hand. The compositional element present in this image is symmetry, and the elements of design include line and shape. Symmetry is found through the duplication and vertical flipping of the image, as it is 2 of the exact same image mirrored and put together in one image. Line is found in the man’s jumper and in the paving, but is mostly seen in the shadows. Shape is found in the man with his phone and suitcase, as well as the shadow they’re creating.

Edits:
  • The image was duplicated.
  • It was then flipped in photoshop.
  • The levels were then adjusted.

Up in Flags

Cultural Image

This image was taken in the Sydney CBD, while on a photography class excursion to the city. It is a French style cafe in a major food court, making it a cultural image, as the French cuisine is displayed in a busy Sydney hotspot. This image includes elements of line, shape and colour. Line is found in the flags, the pole holding up the lights, and in the shelving units. Shape is also found in the flags, and differently shaped shelving units, as well as in the female workers. This is also a very colourful image, as the bright lights are shining on the brightly painted, colourful shelving units, which are filled with colourful decorations and food, the multi coloured flags, and the workers' French style red hats.

Edits:

  • I changed the levels to the image to make the colours more vibrant.

Stairway to Success

Cultural and Structural Image

This image was one of many taken on a photography class excursion to the city. This photo in particular was taken in the Sydney CBD. The man, and his nature of going to work in the busy Sydney CBD make it a cultural image, while the staircase makes it a structural image. Compositional elements present in the image include angle, perspective and repetition, and elements of design include line and shape. This photo was taken from a high angle, as it is looking down towards the staircase and man. Repetition is found in the repeated lines of the stairs, while perspective is found in the hand rails, leading up the stairs, on the left, right and middle. The lines in the image create geometric shape, and the man adds an aspect of organic shape.

Edits:

  • I changed the levels of the image.
